What is a check valve?

A check valve (also called a backflow preventer or one-way valve) is a mechanical component that allows liquids to flow in only one direction. As soon as the pressure drops or the flow direction reverses, the valve closes automatically to prevent dangerous or unwanted backflow.

How does a check valve work?

When the medium enters from the permitted inlet side, the flow pressure pushes against an internal shut-off element. This element—often a ball, cone, diaphragm, or flap—is pushed aside or back against the resistance of a light spring or solely by the flow force. The path is clear and the medium can pass through the valve unobstructed.
